Comprehensive Evaluations

A comprehensive evaluation is needed if there are complex learning and attention problems. It is also appropriate for those wishing to gain a thorough understanding of areas of strength and weakness to inform individualized recommendations designed to improve functioning. For children, a comprehensive evaluation is always recommended. Of course, if there has been previous testing, we would certainly want to review those results and incorporate them into a new evaluation as appropriate.

A comprehensive evaluation involves a thorough initial interview that typically lasts for two hours, followed by two testing sessions on separate days (each lasting approximately 3-4 hours, plus a lunch break). Testing involves administration of measures assessing a number of areas (e.g., intellectual functioning, academic achievement, language and psycholinguistic skills, visual-perceptual and motor-coordination, learning and recall, executive functioning, emotional/behavioral symptoms) that are related to areas of concern identified during the initial interview. Questionnaire measures are also administered, both to the individual being evaluated and to others (e.g., teachers, spouses, co-workers, roommates) who have had the opportunity to observe the individual’s functioning in different settings.

Results, impressions, and individualized recommendations are then offered during a feedback session, to be scheduled upon the completion of testing. An extensive report detailing background information, evaluation findings, and recommendations is also provided.

The cost of a Comprehensive Evaluation is generally between $2500-$3500 and is based on the number of hours of service provided. This range is offered as an estimate, NOT a binding quote. Payments of $900 are required at the initial intake and feedback sessions.

Focused ADHD Evaluations

A Focused ADHD evaluation assesses ADHD symptoms and includes limited cognitive/neuropsychological testing so that individualized recommendations can be generated. This may mean that the evaluation will not meet the requirements of some institutions for qualifying to receive accommodations, particularly if there are questions about specific learning disabilities. Focused ADHD Evaluations are similar in structure to the Comprehensive Evaluation, but involve only one testing day (3-4 hours plus a lunch break). It is important to note that this more abbreviated evaluation is generally not adequate for children.

The cost of a Focused ADHD Evaluation is generally between $1700-$2500 (this range is offered as an estimate, NOT a binding quote), and payments of $650 are required at the initial intake and feedback sessions.

Brief ADHD Evaluations

This more limited ADHD evaluation involves a thorough initial interview and administration of behavioral questionnaire measures. Feedback about the results will be provided during a 30-minute feedback session and results are documented in a brief report that also includes general recommendations. Brief ADHD Evaluations are offered, in slightly different formats, through both the LEARN Clinic and the PSTC Main Clinic.

  • LEARN Clinic. Evaluations are conducted or supervised by the LEARN Clinic Associate Director, who is always directly involved in giving feedback. There will often be advanced clinical graduate students involved in these evaluations as well. The cost of a Brief ADHD Evaluation is $500, and payments of $250 are required at the initial interview and the feedback session.
  • Main Clinic. Availability of these evaluations are very limited, based on the availability of graduate students who complete the evaluations, as well as licensed psychologists in the community who provide supervision. The cost of the Main Clinic brief ADHD evaluation is $150 for UW students and $200 for non-students.

Consultation/Records Review

If you are not sure what sort of assessment is needed, or if there has been recent testing, a record review/consultation with the Associate Director, Dr. Julie Quamma, may be appropriate. If the consultation indicates that further evaluation is recommended and the family wishes to pursue further LEARN Clinic evaluation, testing appointments may then be scheduled.

We charge $500 flat rate for a consultation, which includes a 1.5 to 2 hour initial interview, scoring of any screening questionnaires administered, and a brief write-up of the consultation that includes any conclusions and recommendations discussed that day. Any additional services will incur additional charge at the LEARN Clinic $200 per hour rate.

IQ Testing and Giftedness Evaulations

If there are questions about giftedness with no concerns about learning difficulties or social/emotional/behavioral difficulties, we can do an evaluation of intellectual functioning. This involves an initial interview, the administration and scoring of the IQ test, a feedback session, and a brief written report. There may be other reasons clients may request IQ testing, and each referral will be evaluated individually to determine if this kind of testing is appropriate. If there are questions about giftedness along with concerns about academic achievement and/or social/emotional/behavioral adjustment, a comprehensive evaluation is recommended.

Costs for this service generally range from $800-1000 and are based on number of service hours.

Kindergarten Readiness Evaluations

We can provide evaluation of a young child’s readiness for kindergarten. Parents should be asked to be clear about the specific school requirements for this evaluation, as schools may differ regarding tests they require. Typically, testing can be completed in one session of approximately three hours (rather than the typical two testing sessions).

The full evaluation requires approximately 8 hours of service, with an average cost of $1500.

Developmental Delay

Referrals where the main question involves investigating problems with development will be considered on a case-by-case basis. Many of these referrals will be best served at a clinic that specializes in working with children with developmental disorders such as the Center for Health and Human Development at the University of Washington. If the referral is appropriate for the LEARN Clinic, a Comprehensive Evaluation would be required (see above).

Behavioral Adjustment Problems

The LEARN Clinic may provide consultation around behavioral adjustment problems. This type of referral is particularly appropriate when there are learning problems involved. If not, it may be more efficient for families to be provided with a referral for a professional who can evaluate the behavioral concerns AND provide intervention. Referrals of this nature will be considered on a case-by-case basis.
