Research

My primary research and clinical interests lie in the assessment, treatment, and prevention of conduct problems in children. I am part of a team of investigators from several universities across the country that is conducting a large multi-site prevention trial (Fast Track) concerned with the long-term prevention of conduct problems in young high-risk children. The preventive intervention began in first grade and extended through Grade 10. The children are currently 16-18 years old. My primary responsibilities have been the development and maintenance of the family-based intervention component of the intervention, and running the Seattle site. I am also interested in the ongoing evaluation of a behaviorally based family intervention for young (3 to 8 years old) children who are excessively oppositional (_Helping the Noncompliant Child_; Forehand & McMahon, 1981; McMahon & Forehand, 2003). A developing research interest concerns the role of child and adolescent psychopathology as a risk factor for tobacco use. I am especially interested in studying developmental pathways that lead to the initiation of tobacco use.
