Institute for Learning and Brain Sciences
The Institute for Learning and Brain Sciences is an interdisciplinary center conducting innovative research on lifelong learning and the brain. We believe that scientific study of the developing mind and brain is the next great research frontier and that discoveries in the next decade will be comparable to those in genetics, biotechnology, and informatics. Our goal is to make Seattle and the Institute the nexus of 21st century research on the science of learning. We seek to quicken the pace of discoveries that make a difference to theory and practice. By conducting innovative research and disseminating this knowledge to international audiences, we will advance the understanding and appreciation of the importance of learning throughout the lifespan.

The program’s mission is to provide treatment services (medication or psychotherapy) to trauma survivors. As a research program for post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), we seek to offer the most innovative, empirically supported, and effective treatments for the disorder. At the UW Center for Anxiety and Traumatic Stress we study and treat the symptoms of PTSD. Because we receive funding for our research, we are able to offer no-cost services to eligible individuals who are experiencing trauma-related problems.

Fast Track
In response to the relative dearth of economic analyses of prevention programs, the project provides a cost-of-illness or social cost study of the Fast Track intervention. There are four specific aims: (1) identify the impact of Fast Track on the costs of illness for the high-risk children participating in the study that have occurred or will occur during the first 14 years of the study; (2) calculate cost-effectiveness ratios for key outcomes, including measures of mental health status, delinquency, teenage pregnancy, drug and alcohol use, and sexually transmitted diseases as well as a measure of quality of life and of the impact on caregivers' well-being; (3) project the future costs of illness for study participants (when the participants are age 20 or older); (4) identify subgroups of participants for whom the benefits of the intervention are especially large or small.
