Project Description:

If you or anyone you know is interested in an internship at Children’s Hospital’s Inpatient Psychiatric Unit (IPU), we are now taking applications for winter 2009 academic quarter. The deadline for applications is **Noon Thursday November 19th 2009.** Our internships run for 10 weeks total. You will be assigned to one 8 hour ‘day’ or ‘evening’ shift to attend each week. Day shifts run from 7am-3:30pm and evening shifts from 2:30pm-11pm. At first you will mostly be observing, taking opportunities to assist staff where you feel comfortable, and joining in facilitating positive activities with the children. As you progress you will get to try out your working knowledge of our unit philosophy, help run small lesson sessions called ‘groups,’ and document what you see - exactly as our floor staff do. You will also be exposed to behavior modification/treatment plans, crisis intervention/safety policies, and treatment team structure. You will not be doing therapy nor will there be any opportunity to follow therapists or psychiatrists. Expect to work with a variety of children in need of crisis care, some of whom may have explosive or intense moments and some who just need a safe place to start improving resources/skills. In total the unit consists of 20 beds and we are generally full. While kids are on out unit they are split into three age groups A, B, and C … roughly elementary (3-9), middle school aged (10-13), and high school aged (14+). Each week you will work with one age group. Thanks for your interest. For any other questions regarding internships email us at psych.interns@seattlechildrens.org.

Skills / Experience Preferred:

Please send contact info (email/phone/mailing address), a CV or resume, and short statement of intention to psych.interns@seattlechildrens.org. The statement of intention is a few paragraphs that give us an idea what you intend to gain from being an intern. The deadline for applications is Noon Thursday November 19th 2009. We will choose some applicants to attend a group interview. We will offer 6 internships a quarter. The official internships will start soon after the winter academic quarter begins. Please remember that since you will be guests on a closed psychiatric unit we need to have you officially classified as a student/intern in order for you to interact with our kids. This means that each applicant must make arrangements to be enrolled in a course for credit that covers their internship through their home institution. Most Colleges and Universities offer some form of independent study/directed study course that allow the University to keep tabs on what you are learning and collect an evaluation of your performance at the conclusion of the internship.
