Short Project Description
Beginning Fall Quarter 2008, we will be seeking highly motivated students to join the Mental Health Services Research Team, led by Kate Comtois, Ph.D. One of our currently funded projects is entitled "Suicidal Patients Seeking Help at an Emergency Room: Pilot Trial of a ‘Next-Day Appointment’ Outpatient Treatment."
In this project, we are evaluating two approaches to outpatient mental heath follow-up for patients who come to the emergency room/hospital because they are thinking about killing themselves or have attempted suicide. One treatment is the standard approach, which includes seeing a mental health clinician and a psychiatrist for evaluation, treatment with psychiatric medications, support and validation, and referral services. The other treatment includes all of these things but also includes an experimental intervention focused specifically on changing the problems that put a patient at risk for suicide. We would like to see if the experimental treatment is an effective addition to the standard treatment alone.
