Short Project Description
The Extended Family Study of Autism (XGEN) is an extension of a previous study conducted at UW called the Family Study of Autism (FSA). The goal of the FSA was to collect phenotypic and genetic data on families with two or more children diagnosed with an autism spectrum disorder (ASD) in order to gain a better understanding of the genetics of the disorder. The goal of XGEN is to recruit additional biological relatives—aunts, uncles, grandparents, and first cousins—of original FSA members and to collect phenotypic and genetic data on these individuals. By analyzing genetic and behavioral characteristics of extended family members of individuals with autism, this study seeks to further our understanding of the broader autism phenotype and to link these traits to genes.
