Short Project Description

The purpose of this research is to gain a better understanding of the mechanisms underlying the process of concurrent smoking and drinking among college student smokers who engage in heavy episodic drinking. Study recruitment will occur with the help of social networking sites such as Facebook and MySpace. Participants will use smart phones to complete online assessments about their drinking and tobacco use over the course of 21 days. This next phase of this study will involve developing and evaluating an online intervention for heavy drinking and smoking. Research assistants on this project will assist in participant recruitment and scheduling, train participants in using the smart phones, administer study measures, and conduct literature searches on relevant topics.

Skills / Experience Preferred

Computer skills such as MS Word, MS Excel and SPSS are desirable. Experience using social networking websites (such as Facebook and MySpace) and creating a personalized web blog, experience using PsycInfo to conduct literature searches, and knowledge of how to correctly operate the functions of a smart phone are also preferred.
