Undergraduate Honors Program
The Psychology Honors program offers a challenging educational experience with the opportunity for significant research and independent study. It requires a two year commitment and students generally join the honors program Fall Quarter of their junior year. The emphasis of the program is intensive, sustained library and laboratory research supervised by a faculty advisor culminating in a senior thesis. Students who participate in the Psychology honors program graduate with a Bachelor of Science or a Bachelor of Arts with Distinction in Psychology.
What does the program involve?
Students register for PSYCH 350, Honors Research Seminar, during autumn and either winter or spring quarters of their junior year. During fall quarter PSYCH 350 psychology faculty members present their ongoing research. Students read papers recommended by faculty and write a brief paper summarizing interests and indicating the psychology faculty with whom they wish to work. Under the supervision of a faculty adviser, students write a Junior paper review scholarship in their area of interest.
PSYCH 450 Honors Research Seminar is taken autumn and either winter or spring quarters of the senior year. Under direct faculty supervision, students design and execute am independent research project, analyze the results, write an APA style paper of their results. During Spring quarter, graduating seniors present their research to their Honors/Distinction classmates.
Students must maintain a 3.5 GPA and take at least twelve credits of Psychology 498 and/or 499 which are taken in conjunction with their independent research.
Admission Requirements
Psychology majors join this program if they have a grade point average of 3.5 or above. Students who are not declared psychology majors, but who plan to declare the major and are interested in the honors program should talk with Undergraduate Advising in Room 119, Guthrie Hall.
Admissions Procedure
Students wishing admission to the honors program should talk with the Undergraduate Advising Office (Rm 119 Guthrie Hall, 206-543-2698). After reviewing the requirements, those interested in the Psychology Departmental Distinction program make an appointment via email with the Departmental Honors faculty advisor for an admission interview. The best time to inquire about the Honors Program is Spring Quarter of the sophomore year.
