Departmental Learning Goals for Psychology 330: Laboratory in Animal Behavior

By the end of this course, students will be able to:
  1. Provide examples of current research in animal behavior based on in-class presentations/demonstrations by UW researchers.
  2. Observe animals and keep a log of these observations in a field notebook. Motivate these field observations with a primary research question and predictions, explain the methods used for observation and the findings, and use the primary literature to structure and support the descriptions of behavioral observations.
  3. Write about the primary literature in animal behavior by being able to summarize and/or critique it. Critique the methodology used by other researchers or students in terms of how well the experimental design addresses the research question.
  4. Use the statistical knowledge from other courses to analyze data and interpret the results of analyses. Use appropriate technology (e.g. MS Excel or SPSS) for data collection, management, analysis, summary, and presentation.
  5. Communicate findings from complex sets of data in writing and provide appropriate rationale for the information conveyed in charts, tables, and figures.
  6. Create a research proposal to investigate a question about animal behavior. Carry out each step of the research project and present your findings in a scientific forum in both oral and written form.
