Learning Goals for Psychology 403: Motivation

This course will explore the physiological, cognitive and psychosocial aspects of human motivation. Course discussions and assignments are designed to enhance and assess your understanding of the topics presented in the assigned readings. The aims of this class are:
- To develop a knowledge base about the theories and research on physiological, cognitive and psychosocial aspects of motivation; including ingestion, sexual behaviors, addiction, performance, emotions, and control (assessed through classroom and online participation, group presentation, and two written essays).
- To demonstrate a deeper understanding of the physiological, cognitive and psychosocial factors that drive behavior, based on synthesis of new concepts presented in the readings, independent research on related topics, and prior learning about behavior (assessed through presentation and written essays).
- To develop and demonstrate critical thinking skills in both discussion and written formats (assessed through participation, presentation and written essays).
- To apply your new understanding to personal experience, including evaluation of personal motivation and control (assessed through participation and written essays).
- To improve your writing and oral presentation skills focused on clear communication of your own understanding and ideas (assessed through participation, presentation, and written essays).
