Departmental Learning Goals for Psych 452: Self Concept
Jonathon Brown
Course Description:How do infants develop a self-concept? Where does self-esteem come from, and how can it be changed? Why do some people work hard to achieve their goals, while others give up easily? These are just some of the questions self psychologists address in their research. Self psychology is the study of (a) how people think and feel about themselves, (b) where these thoughts and feelings come from, and (c) how these thoughts and feelings influence our behavior. Psychology 452 provides an overview of these topics. Classes and discussion sections will consist of lectures, discussions, and activities.
Learning GoalsStudents should leave this course with an understanding of:
- How the self-concept develops in infancy and changes throughout the life span
- Where self-esteem comes from and how it can be improved
- How self-referent thoughts and feelings guide our behavior
- How to write a concise term paper. The course is a “W” class and students write multiple papers. The first few papers are short (2-3 pages), and the final paper is a longer review (8-10 pages) of a topic in self-psychology.
