Department Learning Goals for Psych 461: Asian American Psychology

By the end of this course, students will be able to:

  1. Understand how academic research can inform on the major psychological issues facing the Asian American community (assessed by in-class participation, weekly reaction papers, and final project).
  2. Understand how academic research can inform on how Asian Americans react to racialized representations of their group (assessed by in-class participation, weekly reaction papers, and final project).
  3. Understand how studying Asian Americans can inform on race in America (assessed by in-class participation, weekly reaction papers, and final project).
  4. Understand the relationship between emerging ideas and theories within (i.e., other academic disciplines like sociology and history) and outside academia (e.g., popular press articles). Appreciate how psychology informs on theories from other fields and how theories from other fields motivate psychological studies (assessed by in-class participation and weekly reaction papers).
  5. Appreciate the ways in which culture and experience affect how knowledge is constructed and how privilege, power, and oppression may affect prejudice, discrimination, and inequity (assessed by in-class participation and weekly reaction papers).
  6. Understand how stereotypes can impact behavior (assessed by in-class participation and weekly reaction papers).
  7. Understand the interplay between extrinsic (e.g., society) and intrinsic (e.g., within individuals themselves) factors in constructing the Asian American experience (assessed by in-class participation and weekly reaction papers).
  8. Develop and improve psychological research skills by critically evaluating journal articles, designing psychology studies, collecting and analyzing data, and presenting results (assessed by in-class participation, final project and weekly reaction papers).
  9. Formulate a written argument about Asian American psychology that is logical coherent, relies on scientific evidence, and draws appropriate conclusions from that evidence (assessed by weekly reaction papers and final project).
  10. Improve writing skills by making connections between course readings or content and critically evaluating findings (assessed by weekly reaction papers and final project).
  11. Improve presentations skills, both of other research and own research (assessed by leading discussion and final presentation).
