Departmental Learning Goals for Psych 462: Human Memory

Susan Joslyn

  1. The student will understand the relationship between empirical work and theories about human memory.
  2. The student will develop the critical thinking skills necessary to evaluate and explain psychological issues and arguments related to this field.
  3. The student will be able to present their explanations and arguments in coherent written form using scientific writing style.
  4. In particular, the student will understand by the 3-store model of memory and the research it has generated.
  5. The student will understand each component of the model, the early supporting evidence, as well as contemporary views and counter arguments.
  6. The student will also understand principles involved in tying memory processes to their biological underpinnings based on some specific examples.
  7. The student will become familiar with emerging topics in memory such as autobiographical memory, implicit memory, and the effect of emotion on memory.
