Psychology 466: Judgment and Decision Making

John Miyamoto

Course Overview: The psychology of judgment and decision making focuses on answering two questions, (i) how do people make decisions, and (ii) how should people make decisions. Theories of judgment and decision making are based on theoretical models of decision making, experimental studies of judgment and decision making processes, and naturalistic studies of decision making.

Specific Learning Goals:

  1. To understand the normative theory of how people ought to make decisions.
  2. To understand the critique of human decision processes that came to be known as the heuristics and biases program.
  3. To understand the factors that typically influence how we make decisions.
  4. To learn to analyze human decision making in real world situations.
  5. To improve our own decisions by emphasizing good decision practices and avoiding the common pitfalls of making decisions.
