Learning Goals for Psych 481: Seminar in Advanced Quantitative Methods

Laura Little

  1. Gain historical perspective on the development of statistical inference in behavioral science.
  2. Hone one’s understanding of the value and limitations of null hypothesis significance testing.
  3. Develop a working knowledge of competing/supplemental inferential methods (e.g., confidence intervals, effect sizes, Bayesian inference, meta-analysis).
  4. Understand how simulation methods are used to assess the robustness of competing statistical procedures.
  5. Become exposed to the scholarly work of leading psychologists and methodologists who have conducted research or written about statistical procedures.
